Burrito (by Biggs)

I went to the launch of a Social Enterprise this evening which of course meant free booze, no dinner. My eating over the last few days of work travel has been a bit sketchy so I knew I needed to put something in my stomach before bed so I got a lukewarm 'burrito' from the corner store on the way home.

This theoretically should have been terrible but perhaps the rule 'even a bad burrito is a pretty good burrito' applies here. It had some beans and corn and.....er, meat....and was pretty tasty. The end bit was just raw tortilla but I'm not necessarily deducting any points for that.

Cheese and Mushroom Thing and Wine with Cheese and Crackers (by Biggs)

I was hungry hungry this evening but also at an airport minutes away from boarding my flight so I bought the most accessible item possible - this cheese and mushroom sandwich type thing. It was GREAT! I'm not kidding.....savoury and good but also too small.

After an inevitable last minute flight delay of two hours I was more than ready for some wine with cheese and crackers on the plane.

Pizza (by Biggs)

Today was a very special day. I'm in Adelaide for work and one of my dear friends Katie has lived in Adelaide for a few years now. I always promised a visit but it took me until now and a work trip to get me here.

She's just had a little baby boy, has two young girls, her husband was out working late and her father was visiting but she was still super keen for me to join the chaos of dinner time for six and ordered some pizzas for us to share.

I provided champagne. It was, after all, a celebration! Lovely pizza, a lovely night.

Headache Tablets (by Biggs)

Okay, no more sitting on the couch. Back at work and work today meant flying to Adelaide. I had a cracking headache by the time I arrived and my hotel seemed in the middle of nowhere with zero eating options easily available so headache tablets, a bottle of water and bed was what I decided on for dinner.

Poke (by Biggs)

I still haven't moved from the couch, I'm now addicted to UberEats - I ordered Hawaiian. Fuck yeah!

I decided I needed something that contained at least one vegetable and was a bit fresh tasting. This was the perfect solution. I've seen poke on the TV but never thought I'd see it in real life. I was blown away....just great.

A bed of rice - salmon sashimi, prawns, crab salad on a bed of rice with cucumber, tomatoes, seaweed salad, edamame, pineapple and crispy wanton.

Bao (by Biggs)

Okay, I've got the house to myself for the weekend, had a bit of a rough day at work and so gathered a blanket and headed straight to the couch.

I really wanted comforting bao for dinner but didn't know how to make that happen given my energy levels, lack of ingredients and no recipe for a dough I've heard is quite tricky to make.

Then I remembered Red telling me how great UberEats is.....I decided to dabble....she was right. Anything you can dream up, delivered to your door within 30 minutes at very little cost.

I got three bao - a fried tofu, pork belly and pork brisket. My mood got better with every mouthful!

Cake (by Biggs)

It was a mates birthday today so a bunch of us headed to the pub. His girlfriend put in an epic effort of baking a cake, packing it up and bringing it in to the pub (along with a giant knife) for everyone to enjoy. And everyone did enjoy!

The cake was Golden Gaytime themed and, whilst I've broken my patriotic responsibilities having never eaten one, by all accounts it tasted exactly like one.

There were a few demands for the recipe but I'm happy with the current process of being hand delivered cake any time I'm drinking at the pub.

Chicken Wings and Kimchi Fries (by Biggs)

Yeah, I ordered food to be delivered tonight. I've been wanting to try the 'signature wings' from a Korean place up the road for quite some time and tonight was the night. They were pretty good but G's specialty is wings and he is pretty shit-hot at them so comparatively these were a touch lackluster.

The Kimchi fries however were most excellent! I decided I should order a salad to keep my insides ticking but it turned out to be more mayo than salad. Oh well, I tried.

Country Cheese Biscuits (by Biggs)

Whilst I certainly know that G to feeds me quite regularly, I wasn't quite so aware to what extent I depend on that.

He's been overseas for about 5 days and I've resorted to eating country cheese biscuits for dinner. Lucky I LOVE country cheese biscuits!

Salami and Capsicum Pizza (by Biggs)

Red and I achieved a thing tonight we've been procrastinating about for quite some time. It was a most enjoyable thing but we still deemed our attendance as worthy of a beer and pizza reward at Bar Fred. I shortlisted the pizza menu to mushroom and gorgonzola, salami and capsicum or smoked salmon and capers then Red made the ultimate decision of salami and capsicum. Her reasoning was that we'd had cheese and mushroom gozleme the previous day and she's not super jazzed about seafood on a pizza.

The pizza was most satisfying.

Pasta Bake (by Biggs)

A boozy afternoon in the sunshine meant an easy Sunday night dinner made from whatever I could find in our kitchen. There was some pasta, cheese and a mystery sauce.

Some may call this a pasta bake.....it was probably closer to a cheese bake.

Spicy Pasta with Homemade Bacon (by Biggs)

Another lazy meal tonight....some pasta, some spicy sauce, all very simple but "Is that homemade bacon?" I hear you ask? Yes it fucking is!

Boiled Eggs (by Biggs)

Home alone - no one should be surprised that I could only be arse to boil up a couple of eggs for myself for dinner.

I've got a fairly ingrained habit of over-cooking eggs so was quite impressed with my effort tonight. It was probably impatience more so than timing but, whatever gets you there.

Rogan Josh (by Biggs)

I asked G what he wanted for his last meal before heading to Japan and he suggested something cheap and warming. Rogan Josh is always nicely warming and, given I went with a pouch of pre-made sauce, I only had to buy one other ingredient. It would have been much better with lamb but I didn't have enough time to make it tender so went with some chicken I could fry off quickly.

I'm sure anyone that knows anything about Indian food would turn their nose up at this but I reckon you can get some great boil in a bag Indian bases and I'm very lazy so I'm sticking with it.

Happy with my cook on the rice, happy with dinner all round. No chance I'm doing the washing up now that I've got the house to myself for the week.

Tofu Satay (by Biggs)

Nick invited me over to dinner tonight before we headed to his local pub for trivia. Tofu satay was on the menu and, whilst it pains me to compliment Nick, it was pretty fucking great.

I love a mid-week dinner at a mate's place and never mind what ends up on my plate but this definitely had the markings of being made by someone that's pretty handy in the kitchen. Tofu was nicely charred, vegetables cooked to perfection, delightfully tender rice and a satay sauce that actually tasted like something other than peanut butter.

The tastiness was probably a result of whatever went into the morter and pestle I heard grinding away in the kitchen. Nick seemed only only willing enough to reveal that it was made with mystery spices mixed with a previously homemade mystery curry mix.

Oh well, whatever went into it.....it was super tasty.

Pizza (by Biggs)

It was a surprise to me this morning when I as informed it was my cooking night. I was even more surprised when I managed to haul my massively hungover self to the grocery store to collect ingredients.

I was in no way surprised when I ended up just ordering pizza for dinner instead.

Beer (by Biggs)

I did a whole, whole, whole lot of eating today at a backyard party at Red's place to celebrate the Raddest 100 Countdown but probably couldn't say any of it was timed in conjunction with 'dinner' - by that stage it was all just beer.

If this wasn't a dinner-specific blog I could regale you with the incredible treats we had throughout the day - casseroles, a French onion soup with homemade bread, pizzas cooked in the BBQ - but, all you need to know is - I had beer for dinner.

Pork Buns and Wine (by Biggs)

Flying out of Canberra tonight but at the mercy of huge flight delays so I enjoyed my Canberra airport tradition of pork buns and red wine.

It's been a while since I've dabbled in this because of Qantas Club visits during the last few airport visit but flying alone tonight with no access meant pork buns.

I was not disappointed.

Akiba (by Biggs)

Some of the Canberra folk took me out to dinner tonight. They asked how much I was willing to spend on dinner and seemed quite pleased when I said that money is no object when it comes to eating good food.

They decided on a super swanky modern Asian, mainly Japanese, place that does share plates of excellence. I avoided any ordering responsibilities particularly as my friends have been here enough times to have tried almost everything on the menu and know what's good.

We had a bunch of raw fish, some rare beef, soft-shell crab buns but the highlight of the meal was definitely the charred fish wings - holy shit delicious.

We complimented this all with many many beers and wines....not to mention the flaming cocktails! Oh, hang on, I just mentioned them didn't I?

Butter Chicken (by Biggs)

I came to Canberra tonight for work flying in at the crack of dawn after a massive night.....enjoying myself.....so my the time I checked into the hotel I was pretty ready for room service, crappy TV and bed.

My dear friend Katie had a baby today so I was delighted to see Indian and Red Wine on the menu.....a tradition we hold any time a celebration is required. Butter chicken wouldn't ever be my first choice but not surprising that it was the only option on a room service menu.

It turned out to be pretty terrific in the end. Welcome to the world Master Thomas!

Pasta Puttanesca (by Biggs)

I really enjoyed cooking tonight, it's a long weekend, I had a glass of wine in hand, the Bulldogs had just won. Pottering around in the kitchen making a simple meal was just what I was in the mood for.

I've sort of lost my cooking confidence of late so have decided to concentrate on simple classics for the next little while.

G asked why it's called puttanesca halfway through the meal, clearly reflecting on some inside knowledge. In the style of prostitutes....that's what it means. No one seems to know if it's the lure or the scent but I think it's because of the fishy anchovy paste in the base.

A tomato base cooked down in garlic, anchovy paste and chilli with some black olives, capers and parsley stirred through spaghetti.

Dinner was most excellent.

Party Pies (by Biggs)

A long weekend means party pies because - it's a party! I at least decided to serve them with some vegetables. I'd thought some classic peas and mashed potato goes well with pies but then G and I met for beers and all plans went out the window. I still managed to buy some peas on the way home but there was no time left to cook up potatoes.

Fortunately our local supermarket sells pre-roasted potatoes and home made bits and pieces for the lazy and unorganized amoungst us. On offer tonight was potato bake. I'm bloody useless at making it but this version was delicious - perhaps because I was full of beer. G suggested I  used up some bacon he had in the fridge and there was no hesitation on my part. Peas and bacon - a winning combination.

Doritos (by Biggs)

I had plans to head out tonight but was super unmotivated/poorly/feeling sorry for myself. Doritos probably weren't the best choice for dinner - some vegetable consumption would have been well advised.

Anything that was in our house required some level of preparation so instead I went to the little shop four doors down and bought a packet of Doritos that only involved the preparation of opening the packet.

Burger (by Biggs)

I refused to cook tonight but still had to provide dinner so ordered some take away. There's a burger place up the road for us that has always caught our eye....mainly because of the great multitude of delivery scooters carving up the footpath with their kickstands. Based on the number of scooters I figured they could get the burgers to us pretty quick avoiding any sogginess which has been our previous concern with burger delivery.

I ordered us burgers with bacon, egg and cheese - they all come with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. Sometimes I think a burger is a burger is a burger but when you're presented with a good one you suddenly know different. And boy, this was a good one!

The mountain super crispy salty fries were just an added bonus. I know it was meant to be Tortilla Tuesday but I'm going to hold a house meeting soon to see if we could perhaps consider a switch to Burger Tuesdays....we'll be getting these again.

Sausage Tortillas (by Biggs)

This idea started with a plan to make prawn and chorizo tortillas topped with crispy onions. Then laziness set in. First - I got a bit suss about the prawns on offer at the markets, then I decided to flesh things out with chorizo sausages instead of chorizo. I was pretty happy with my guacamole (except I forgot the basic seasonings) and I totally bailed on the crispy onions last minute (laziness prevails again).

As a result dinner turned out to be the weird combination of sausage and avocado tortillas.....that's not a thing. Disappointingly the sausages didn't taste like anything and have now leached weird orange fat onto virtually every surface of the kitchen.

I feel like I've said this before but, I'll try harder.

Noodles (by Biggs)

I did some hermiting this evening and so pot noodles were the order of the day. These were kim chi flavoured and quite spicy.

Meze Platter (by Biggs)

I met Danielle and Harv for dinner before a touch of Fringe Festival, it was in my hood so I was responsible for choosing the location. I'd originally picked out local dive bar but it was super busy so I offered up a choice of Malaysian, Lebanese or Italian (pizza!).

Danielle choose Lebanese and we immediately chose the Meze Platter. We basically asked them to feed us everything. They even offered us a choice between a lemon chicken or something along the lines of a meatcake. We asked the waitress to con the chef into giving us both....which she did. There were also massive amounts of breads, cheeses, meats, dips, salads.

All so very very good.

Japanese Goodness (by Biggs)

I wasn't in the mood to go home tonight so I went with my reliable go tos - FAD Gallery Bar for beers and Yamato for dinner. I ordered way too much food for one person - I forgot how generous the karage chicken is here and I always have to get takoyaki. I did go with something I thought would be good for me - a tofu salad, pretty well a slab of soft tofu topped with some lettuce with a dressing. It was however quite tasty and I hoovered it down pretty rapidly.

Sushi Noodle Town (by Biggs)

There is a shitty looking sushi noodle place in the main street of our suburb that my friend Bonnie SWEARS by. She's been insisting I go here for a good six months now, I thought I'd hold off until she was next visiting but it turns out tonight was the night.

I'd been to some fringe festival super weird which left me wandering the streets in a bit of an odd, but not entirely unpleasant, mood. My feet led the way and led me straight to Sushi Noodle Town. I ordered the duck noodles and they were fabulous. A touch heavy on the vegetables for my liking but I will go back again and find something a touch more meat-centric.

Twice Cooked Chicken, Chips and Salad (by Biggs)

I decided to use up some leftovers this evening mainly because I couldn't be arsed going to the supermarket. I knew I had salad from Saturday and chips in the freezer. I also thought I had a slab of bacon alas - of course I didn't. Who can keep bacon in their house for more than 1/2 hour.

I did have three drumsticks and considered crumbing them. I wanted to pre-cook them first because I never trust chicken to cook so made up a broth of chicken stock, paprika, chili flakes and bay leaves to gentle cook them in.

I totally over did it and then wasn't in the mood to crumb them so I just fried them off a bit to try and get a crispy skin - fail. I'm failing a lot in the kitchen these days.

I chopped up the salad in a slightly different way to Saturday for variety and dumped the chips on the side.

Must. Try. Harder.

Porterhouse and Salad (by Biggs)

I wondered if a BBQ might be nice this Saturday evening so wandered down to the markets to pick up some porterhouses in preparation. I of course got too lazy to BBQ so just pan fried them, the steaks were quite thick so I popped them in the oven. They were pretty fucking great.

Served with a side of salad because I don't know the last time I ate a green thing!

I did have some crisps to serve with dinner but ended up munching on them throughout the afternoon. They wouldn't have fit on the plate anyway so a blessing in the end I think.

Pizza (by Biggs)

Thursday night on the right fortnight means beers a1000 £ Bend and Spice Girl themed pizza. I like the one with heaps of blue cheese on it so ordered that but also tried a slice of prosciutto and sun-dried tomato deliciousness.
